Our leadership development process is based on the research described in Primal Leadership: Realizing the Power of Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman, Richard Boyatzis and Annie McKee (Harvard Business Review Press, 2001), the research and work of the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland, and over twenty years of experience. A wealth of evidence from years of study on the importance of emotions to learning, help make the compelling case for exactly how critical emotions are to the work of leaders and the business performance of organizations of all kinds. In most organizations, the tendency has been to appoint business leaders or managers on the basis of technical expertise and knowledge. The higher an individual moves up in the organization the more they require people leading skills so that technical expertise and knowledge alone is not enough. They also need social and relational skills, which are the basic grounding of Emotional Intelligence.

Combining expertise with people-skills results in a much more effective leader or manager who is able to:

• Listen effectively
• Show adaptability
• Show empathy
• Offer constructive feedback
• Influence/persuade others
• Motivate followers
• Work collaboratively
• Help the team to create a clear, shared vision

Leadership Development Program Principles

In addition to drawing on the Emotional Intelligence model in our design of programs, several other principals on adult learning guide us in the design and delivery of programs. All of our programs are:

Social

Research shows that adults learn best in the company of other people, through dialogue, discovery and relational support. All of our programs are designed to leverage participant interaction using a range of configurations including pair discussion, small group breakouts and large group discussions.

Highly Experiential

We believe adults learn best when they engage emotionally with the content and draw on their past experience to understand the concepts being shared. While all of our content is research-based, our facilitation is not didactic but instead engages the heart and body, as well as the mind.

Cohort-based

We believe adults learn best when psychological safety and trust is high. For this reason, we prioritize learning in a cohort model. We use Teleos facilitators to demonstrate how safe environments are created and build time into the program design for building the learning community.

Practical and Relevant

Our programs are relevant and grounded in the participant’s real-world experience and life back at work. We build time into the programs for practice and planning for application following the session.

Virtual Delivery

Over the past few years, we at Teleos have been working towards taking our highly experiential program content online for a more impactful, scalable and integrated learning experience. Through our SurePeople online learning platform and Zoom technology, we have been able to provide our relational leadership content virtually and then use the learning platform to integrate the learning through the intersession work and provide additional content and continual facilitator-student contact.
