Robert McDowell has been a leadership coach for over 30 years in a wide variety of roles and organizational settings. He has significant leadership and organizational development experience as a corporate executive, management consultant and entrepreneur in the for-profit, not-for-profit and higher education sectors. His extensive experience living and working abroad enables him to effectively work in diverse multicultural global organizations.

Robert began his coaching career with college students at the Career Development Center at the University of Maryland, College Park as part of his graduate training in counseling psychology. He then began a 22 year career with the international professional services firm of Coopers & Lybrand, LLP, where he served in a variety of human resource leadership positions, ultimately taking on the role of senior human resources partner and National Director of Human Resources for the U.S. firm. During his tenure he was responsible for a broad array of organization-wide initiatives involving leadership development, organizational competency modeling, change management initiatives, partner coaching and coaching of leadership teams. He has continued his coaching activities over the last 10 years as an entrepreneur in his own management consultancy and retained search practice, with a focus on the assimilation of senior executives in new organizational roles.


Robert received his BA from Juniata College (Huntingdon, PA) and his MA from the University of Maryland, College Park. He completed his coaching training through the International Coach Federation (ICF) certified program at the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland — Center for Organization and Systems Development. He has also completed the Program on Negotiation at the Harvard Law School. He is certified in the use of the Emotional Competency Inventory administered through The Hay Group.
